Big Changes in Store for Navy Uniforms

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan -- The shorts for the Navy's new fitness uniform come with a lining so uncomfortable, some say, that sailors have begun ripping it out.

So, even as sailors in Japan were buying the new blue shorts and gold shirts last week, the Navy already is making changes to provide better comfort, according to officials from the Navy Exchange Service Command.

The physical training uniform is just the first of a series of new uniforms for the Navy, according to Command Master Chief Larry Darnell of the exchange command.

Darnell and others are in the Pacific this month to explain the uniform changes to enlisted leaders and local exchange workers.

A new black and khaki service uniform for sailors ranked E-1 to E-6 will begin rolling out on the West Coast this summer, according to Jo Johnson, a uniform operations specialist with the exchange command. The blue, digitized Navy working uniform, for all ranks in the service, will begin rolling out in the winter of 2009, she said.

Johnson, who has been working with Navy uniforms for three decades, complimented the black trousers in the women's service uniform. "This is one of the most beautiful women's pants we've ever had," she said of the black trousers, which have no belt, a front fly and side pockets. The blouse for females, however, is proving harder to fit. "This is going to be our hardest challenge," she said of the "overblouse," which rests untucked and must fit each woman in regulation places at the waist and hip.

The Navy is making multiple sizes to fit a variety of women. So far, samplings have shown that about 85 percent of female sailors can find a suitable shirt from pre-made stocks, Johnson said.

But that other 15 percent? Those women will have to pay to have the blouse tailored, Johnson said. And that tailoring will involve ripping the entire shirt apart so that the seams end up in the regulation places after adjustments, she said. She didn't know an estimate for that tailoring charge.

Fitting the sample NWUs, so far, has gone well, she said. The cargo-style pants will likely require no hemming because the pants will blouse around boots. And the untucked blouse can hit the hip in a range around the cargo pocket and remain within regulation, Johnson said.

The maternity version of the NWU will come with a welcome addition, Johnson said. The shirt will have four buttons along the rib seam to allow the shirt to expand as the baby grows.

The NWU will also come with an all-weather parka made of special material that remains water- and wind-proof with two caveats: it cannot be punctured, even with a sewing needle, and it must be dried in a clothes dryer.

Because no patches can go on the parka, the Yokosuka chiefs raised concerns about how each sailor will identify his or her jacket. A second concern involved the jacket's side vents, a zipper down the sleeve to allow air to circulate on hot, rainy days.

Why, one chief asked, doesn't the vent run down the rib cage so that a sailor on watch can easily reach his weapon?

"That's a good question," Darnell said. "We'll take that one back."

Intended as a successor to the SBD Dauntless, the XSB2D-1 was an unspectacular aircraft. It was large, complicated and heavy, with a R-3350 radial engine, an inverted gull, laminar flow wing, two remote controlled gun turrets, and nosewheel landing gear. Two were built. The USN changed its policy, and the SB2D design was modified to become the single-seat BTD.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt

Originally conceived as a lightweight fighter, the P-47 ended up as the heaviest single-engine fighter flown by the Army Air Forces. The P-47 was used as both a high-altitude escort fighter and a low-level fighter-bomber. More P-47s were produced than any other US fighter before or since. More P-47Ds were produced—12,603—than the total production run of P-38s and nearly as many as the entire run of P-40s. Production began in 1942, and on September 20, 1944, the 10,000th P-47 rolled off the line to much fanfare, including aviatrix Jackie Cochran, the head of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots, dubbing the aircraft "10 Grand." Just 10 months later, the 15,000th P-47 came off the line.
The P-47 entered service with the 56th and 78th Fighter Groups in late 1942 and saw its first combat on April 8, 1943, escorting B-17s and B-24s over Europe. The P-47 picked up the nickname "Jug," because it was something of a juggernaut—heavy, extremely sturdy, and well armed. The early models (and the first blocks of P-47Ds) featured a humpback fuselage that blended into the tail via a "razorback" spine. Later blocks of P-47Ds and all subsequent models (including the 354 Curtiss-built aircraft) had a "bubble" canopy that offered the pilot near 360• visibility. The only theater of operations where the P-47 was not used in quantity was the Aleutians. By the end of 1944, 31 AAF fighter groups flew P-47s. The third- and fourth-ranked AAF aces of World War II, Lt. Col. Francis S. "Gabby" Gabreski (28 victories) and Capt. Robert S. Johnson (27), both flew P-47s in Europe.
P-47s were also flown by Britain (830 aircraft), the Soviet Union, Brazil and Mexico during the war, and a number of countries flew the P-47 after the war. The P-47D and N models served until the formation of the US Air Force, and the F-47 (as it was later redesignated) served with the Air National Guard until 1955.

The F4U was one of the most successful fighters of WWII. It achieved a claimed 11.3 to 1 'kill ratio' in the Pacific. It was fast, but had some handling problems, and early versions tended to 'bounce' upon landing because of their stiff undercarriage. Therefore it was at first restricted to land-based marine units, and equipped all USMC fighter units in the Pacific in the second half of 1943. After some modifications, it was used also for shipboard operations, but continued to require careful handling. The vast majority of WWII F4U sorties (54470 out of 64051) were flown from land bases. The F4U had an inverted gull wing, a streamlined fuselage of circular cross-section and a big propeller. The cockpit was set well back, and the restricted view was a serious problem. 12571 were built, of which 4017 by Goodyear and 735 by Brewster as the FG and F3A, respectively.

The huge XB-19 long-range bomber was a too demanding concept for the technology of its time. It was underpowered and too vulnerable. Only one was built. The XB-19A was, despite its B-letter, a freighter conversion of the bomber prototype. The R-3350 engines were replaced with Allison V-3420's, all armament was removed, and the fuselage rearranged. It was then operated in a transport role during WWII under the designation XB-19A.

F/A-18 Hornet

Pátá Kniha Mojžíšova (Deuteromium), Kap. 7, verš 20: "Nadto sršně pošle Hospodin Bůh tvůj na ně, dokudž by nezhynuli, kteříž by pozůstali, a kteříž by se skryli před tebou." F/A-18 Hornet (sršeň) byl vyvinut z pokusného letadla Northrop YF-17. Jeho úkolem stíhače u U.S.Navy je především získání vzdušné převahy a rovněž ochrana plavidel bojových jednotek.

Hornet byl navržen, aby plnil rozdílné úlohy stíhače a útočného letounu, a následkem toho se vyrábí ve formě, kterou lze snadno přizpůsobit kterékoli z obou úloh změnou počítačového softwaru pro akci (původně měly být vyráběny verze dvě - stíhací a útočná). Byl výsledkem poznání, že je potřeba letoun. který je nenákladný, výrobně jednoduchý a lehký a který nahradí stroje F-4 Phantom a bude operovat společně s komplikovanějšími, ale těžšími a dražšími stroji F-14 Tomcat a F-15 Eagle. Rovněž byla potřeba náhrady za útočný letoun A-7 Corsair.

Pro US Navy a US Marine Corps byla určena smíšená výzbroj složená ze strojů F-14 a F/A-18, kdežto US Air Force přijaly kombinaci strojů F-15 a F-16. Sériová výroba F/A-18A se rozběhla 22. ledna 1976 a stroj poprvé vzlétl 18. listopadu 1978. K oficiálnímu operačnímu nasazení došlo ale až v roce 1983. Po dodání 371 kusů F/A-18A byla výroba v roce 1987 převedena na zlepšenou verzi F/A-18C s malými počítači spřaženými datovou sběrnicí, nikoli jedním velkým počítačem, s modernější vystřelovací sedačkou a možností nést průzkumnou sadu.

Současná verze pro noční útok má také nainstalovaný navigační systém s tepelným zobrazováním Hughes AAR-50. Letoun je vybaven dopplerovským radiolokátorem APG-65, který je schopen sledovat deset a současně zobrazovat osm cílů současně, je zároveň schopen odlišit dva těsně vedle sebe letící cíle. Tři na sobě nezávislé displeje v kabině slouží pro zobrazení údajů z radiolokátoru, další data z různých režimů činnosti, údaje z termovizního systému FLIR, televizních soustav (jsou-li použity) i zobrazení z naváděcích hlavic některých druhů řízené munice. V běžném provozu pilot létá podle zjednodušených informací zobrazených na pokrokově řešeném průhledovém displeji HUD. Vybrané přepínače a ovladače jsou umístěny na řídící páce a páce ovládání motorů (HOTAS). Na spodním centrálním displeji je zobrazována pohyblivá mapa s navigačními údaji, informacemi o cílech i předem známých prostorech ohrožení protivzdušnou obranou protivníka.

Konstrukčně je F/A-18 středoplošník s křídlem se šípovitostí v podstatě jen na náběžné hraně a s rozměrnými vírovými přechody kořene křídla do trupu, pod nimiž jsou umístěny jednoduché nepohyblivé otvory pro přívod vzduchu k motorům. Na koncích křídla jsou lišty pro protiletadlové řízené střely. Dvě rozměrné svislé ocasní plochy jsou ve vertikální rovině vyoseny do tvaru písmene V a jsou umístěny mezi křídlem a vodorovnými ocasními plochami. Mezi nimi jsou dva motory s malým průměrem.

Hornet létá i u Kanadských ozbrojených sil a v řadě armád dalších zemí celého světa. Operuje z pozemních základen (viz U.S. Air Bases), ale je hlavně nedílnou součástí letcké síly letadlových lodí. Hornet je malý, dvoumotorový, velmi hospodárný letoun a tyto vlastnosti jej předurčují ke službě u U.S. Navy a Marine Corps. Jako doplněk k jednosedadlovým variantám (F/A-18A/C) byly vytvořeny i verze dvousedadlové (F/A-18B/D). Obě verze jsou díky mohutné elektronické výstroji schopny útoku za každého počasí a samozřejmě i v noci. Varianta D je z menší části používána i jako výcikové letadlo. V současnosti je vyvíjena modernizovaná varianta F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

Stroj F/A-18 Hornet je jedno- nebo dvoumístný dvoumotorový víceúčelový taktický bojový letoun. Je to první taktický bojový letoun konstruovaný od počátku jak pro plnění úkolů vzdušného boje, tak i pro útoky proti pozemním cílům. V současné době je typ F/A-18 zařazen do výzbroje letectev U.S. Navy a Marine Corps (námořnictva a námořní pěchoty) a zahraničních vojenských letectev států jako Kanada, Austrálie, Španělsko, Kuvajt, Finsko, Švýcarsko a Malajsie. Piloti Hornetů už celkově nalétali více než 3,3 miliónu letových hodin a průběžně ustavují další a další rekordy co do bezpečnosti, spolehlivosti, snadné údržby a přesnosti plnění bojových úkolů. Klíčovým hlediskem vysoké popularity letounů Hornet mezi piloty je snadnost, s jakou je lze upravit pro plnění úkolů stíhání vzdušných cílů či pro útoky na pozemní cíle a naopak. Během operace Pouštní bouře plnily letouny F/A-18 běžně úkoly stíhání i útoků na pozemní cíle současně během jediného bojového letu. Plnily celou řadu úloh: vybojování vzdušné převahy, stíhací doprovod, potlačování nepřátelské protivzdušné obrany, průzkum, funkce leteckého návodčího, palebná podpora vojsk na zemi a útoky na pozemní cíle ve dne i v noci. Typ F/A-18 se osvědčil jako nejuniverzálnější bojový letoun ve výzbroji. Spolehlivost a snadná údržba byla u letounů Hornet uvažována už při samém počátečním návrhu konstrukce. Tyto faktory mají za následek celkově nižší provozní náklady i nároky na údržbu typu F/A-18 ve srovnání s ostatními americkými námořními stíhacími i útočnými letouny a výše nákladů nutných pro udržování po celou dobu životnosti jsou naprosto srovnatelné s jinými moderními víceúčelovými letouny. Schopnost přežít v bojovém prostředí je další klíčovou vlastností letounů Hornet. U typu F/A-18 se používá celá řada systémů a technologií, které zvyšují pravděpodobnost dosažení prostoru cíle bez toho, aby byl stroj zjištěn nepřítelem, a po provedení útoku opět dokázal uniknout i v případě jeho zjištění, eventuelně aby v případě zásahu prostředky protiletadlové obrany nepřítele dopravil zpět svou osádku. U nejnovější varianty F/A-18E/F Super Hornet byly tyto systémy a technologie ještě více vylepšeny. Aby si udržel převahu nad nepřátelskými leteckými prostředky, byl typ F/A-18 průběžně pravidelně modernizován už od samého zařazení do výzbroje v roce 1983. V listopadu 1989 byly také dodány první stroje F/A-18 vybavené pro provádění útoků na pozemní cíle v noci.

Od roku 1991 se letouny F/A-18 dodávají s vylepšenými motory F404-GE-402 se zvýšenou výkonností, které mají až o 20 procent vyšší tah než motory F404 předcházejících verzí. Kombinovaný tah obou motorů letounu Hornet činí 36.000 liber a maximální rychlost více než Mach 1,8. V únoru 1992 začalo letectvo U.S. Marine Corps přebírat první letouny Hornet s možností instalace soupravy pro vzdušný průzkum. V současné době probíhá pod vedením společnosti The Boeing Company program integrace modernizovaného taktického průzkumného systému ATARS (Advanced Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance System) do strojů F/A-18D letectva námořní pěchoty. Operační zkoušky mají proběhnout v období od listopadu 1998 do ledna 1999. Do výzbroje by se tato modifikace měla dostat v březnu 1999. Od května 1994 přebírá letectvo U.S. Navy letouny F/A-18 vybavené vylepšeným palubním radiolokátorem. U tohoto modernizovaného radaru známého pod typovým označením APG-73 došlo k výraznému zvýšení kapacity paměti počítače a rychlosti jeho procesorů. Mimo to jsou dnešní Hornety vybaveny laserovým označovačem cíle/dálkoměrem umístěným ve společném pouzdře s infračerveným senzorem FLIR, což jim umožňuje umisťovat laserem naváděné bomby naprosto přesně na jejich pozemní cíle. Mimořádná provozní spolehlivost letounů Hornet a jejich neustálé vylepšování vyvolalo trvalý zájem o tyto stroje v zahraničí. O možnosti zakoupit v budoucnu tato letadla uvažují v současnosti země jako Filipíny, Chile, Česká republika, Maďarsko a Polsko. Kanada byla prvním zahraničním zákazníkem letounu F/A-18 a dnes disponuje flotilou 138 Hornetů, což je nejvíce mimo USA. Dodávky do Kanady byly splněny v roce 1988. Kanadské stroje CF-18 operují ze základen kanadského vojenského letectva Cold Lake, Alberta, a Bagotville. Kanadské vojenské letectvo v současné době zvažuje možnost realizace programu prodloužení životnosti svých letounů Hornet s tím, že by došlo současně i k modernizaci jejich avioniky. První jednotka australského letectva Royal Australian Air Force -- Operational Conversion Unit -- se základnou Williamtown obdržela své první letouny Hornet v květnu 1985. Stroje dodané RAAF byly montovány v Austrálii a dnes operují ze základen Williamtown na východě a Tindal na severu tohoto nejmenšího kontinentu. Dodávky Hornetů pro RAAF byly splněny v květnu 1990. V současné době celá tato australská flotila letounů F/A-18 prochází dvoufázovým programem upgrade, kdy je do nich montována nová avionika, nové prostředky pasivní i aktivní ochrany, nový radar a nejmodernější zbraňové systémy pro vedení vzdušného boje.

Španělské vojenské letectvo zakoupilo 72 letadel EF-18 v období let 1986 až 1990. Jeho letouny operují ze základen Zaragoza, Torrejon a Meron. V září 1995 si španělské vojenské letectvo objednalo dalších 24 letounů F/A-18A, které byly dříve používány americkým letectvem U.S. Navy. Do dnešního dne jich už bylo dodáno 13 kusů. Kuvajt podepsal kontrakt na dodávku 40 letadel F/A-18 v srpnu 1988. Celá dodávka byla splněna v srpnu 1993. Letouny se nacházejí na základně Al Jabar poblíž města Kuwait City. Letouny určené pro vojenské letectvo Kuvajtu byly jako první vybavené novými motory F404-GE-402 firmy General Electric se zvýšeným výkonem. Kuvajtská zakázka se v současné době nachází ve fázi povýrobní podpory. Spojené státy americké dále podporují vojenské letectvo Kuvajtu dodávkami programu řízení, administrativy, náhradních dílů a výjezdové týmy techniků zajišťují údržbu letadel. Finsko uzavřelo kontrakt na 64 letadel v červnu 1992. Sedm dvoumístných F-18D pro finské vojenské letectvo bylo dodáno kompletních z USA firmou Boeing. Zbývajících 57 jednomístných strojů je montováno ve Finsku v Halli u subdodavatele firmy Boeing, společnosti Finavitec z dodaných sad komponentů. První z jednomístných F-18C dodal Finavitec v červnu 1996 a poslední by měl následovat v roce 2000. Švýcarsko zakoupilo dva kompletní stroje F/A-18 a 32 sad těchto strojů pro vlastní montáž včetně podpůrných zařízení a služeb. První F/A-18D přilétl do Švýcarska v prosinci 1996 a první F/A-18C pak počátkem roku 1997. Soupravy pro montáž zbývajících 32 letadel byly dodány v roce 1997. V současné době probíhá montáž těchto strojů u firmy Swiss Aircraft and Systems Co. v Emmenu poblíž Luzernu ve Švýcarsku, která bude také zajišťovat jejich následný běžný provoz. Malajsie podepsala kontrakt na dodávku osmi letounů F/A-18 včetně následné podpory v prosinci roku 1993. Všechny tyto letouny byly dodány během roku 1997. Společnost Boeing Company je vedoucím výrobního týmu, který zajišťuje výrobu letadel F/A-18 po celých Spojených státech amerických. North American B-25 Mitchell

On January 25, 1939, the Army Air Corps announced a competition for a medium bomber design, but instead of waiting for the prototypes, the Army awarded production contracts to North American for the B-25 and Martin for the B-26. Named in honor of US airpower proponent Brig. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell, the B-25 served in every theater of World War II and was made in larger quantities than any other American twin-engine combat airplane. The 17th Bomb Group at McChord Field, Wash., was the first unit to receive B-25s in 1941. On April 18, 1942, Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle led the Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25B crews took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) and bombed Tokyo and other targets, the first time US aircraft had bombed Japan. The 75-mm cannon in the B-25G/H was used with mixed results, primarily against ships. The Marine Corps received 706 B-25Bs, Cs, and Ds, which were redesignated PBJ-1, and used for antisubmarine patrol duties. Mitchells were later relegated to support duties and did not see service in Korea. The last B-25s were used to train pilots assigned to fly bombers and tankers. Large numbers of B-25s were flown by the Soviet Union and Britain. It was also flown by the Netherlands, Taiwan, and Brazil. A number of surplus B-25s were used by civilian operators as aerial camera ships for Hollywood movies. On May 21, 1960, the last serving aircraft, a VB-25J staff transport, was retired from service at Eglin AFB, Fla.

Consolidated B-24 Liberator

More B-24 heavy bombers were built than any other American airplane in history. The B- 24 was used in every theater in World War II, and it had greater range and could carry a much larger bomb load than the B-17, but it never had the notoriety of the Flying Fortress. Probably the most famous B-24 was named Lady Be Good. On April 4, 1943, returning from a bombing mission, it overshot its base at Soluch, Libya, and was not heard from again. In 1959, the wreckage was found by an oil exploration party 440 miles into the Libyan desert. On August 1, 1943, staging from Benghazi, Libya, 177 Ninth Air Force B-24 crews dropped 311 tons of bombs from low level on the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania, during Operation Tidal Wave. This was the first large-scale, minimum- altitude attack by Army Air Forces heavy bombers on a strongly defended target. Five officers (Lt. Col. Addison E. Baker, Col. Leon W. Johnson, Col. John R. Kane, Maj. John L. Jerstad, and 2d Lt. Lloyd H. Hughes) were awarded the Medal of Honor for this mission. More Air Force Medals of Honor were awarded for this mission than any other in the service's history. The B-24 was also used extensively by Britain. Almost 1,000 were used by the US Navy as PB4Ys. A total of 6,678 B-24Js were built, starting in August 1943. One C-87, the widely used cargo version of the Liberator, named Guess Where II, was intended to be the first Presidential aircraft, although there is no evidence that Franklin D. Roosevelt ever flew in it. B-24 operations were concentrated in the Pacific, and the first Liberators went into action on November 16, 1943, at Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. There were 6,000 operational B-24s in use by the end of 1944, equipping 45 groups. A year later, the type was declared surplus and hundreds were scrapped virtually overnight. The lone XB-24N was a single-tail test version. Approximately a dozen Liberators remain today.

Westland Welkin

High altitude fighter. The design of the Welkin was based on the configuration of the Whirlwind, with high-aspect ratio, long-span wings and Merlin engines. The engines and propellors proved to be unreliable, and the wing was too thick, resulting in a low limiting Mach number. Because the high-flying bomber treat never materialized, the 67 Welkins built were kept in storage. Later Westland built a prototype of a two-seat nightfighter version, but the development of the advanced cabin pressurisation system was the only real benefit from this project.

Grumman P-50 Skyrocket

USAAF version of F5F. The XP-50 had a nosewheel undercarriage, a longer nose, and supercharged engines. The fuselage was redesigned to have a smoother, shark-like shape. It was better than the XF5F-1, but the XP-50 crashed into the Long Island Sound on 14 May 1941 during a test flight after the right engine's turbo-supercharger exploded. Further development of the aircraft was halted and design continued on the XP-65, an improved version of the XP-50.

Douglas B-23 Dragon

The B-23 is a twin-engine bomber developed as a successor to the Douglas B-18. First flown in July 1939, the B-23 incorporated many features of the Douglas DC-3 commercial transport. Although it was much faster than the B-18 and was the first operational Army bomber equipped with a tail gun, the Dragon was soon outclassed by more modern bombers such as the North American B-25 and the Martin B-26. As a result, only 38 B-23s were built.
The B-23s were never used in combat during WW II. Instead they served in secondary roles as reconnaissance, training, transport, and test-bed aircraft. Some of the Dragons used in transport service were redesignated UC-67s.
After the war, all B-23s/UC-67s were declared surplus and many were sold to private operators for use as cargo and executive transports. Several of these aircraft were still flying in the early 1980s.

Boeing Delivers First Production EA-18G Growler to U.S. Navy

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 25, 2007 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] yesterday delivered the first production EA-18G Growler to the U.S. Navy ahead of schedule and within budget.

"The Growler team put together a program plan that...has remained on cost and schedule, while meeting or exceeding all performance parameters. I don't get to say that very often about our programs," said The Hon. Delores Etter, assistant secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, during the delivery ceremony at Boeing Integrated Defense Systems facilities in St. Louis. "We have a great start to a total procurement of over 80 Gs, which will operate in our fleet for decades to come."

The U.S. armed forces' newest airborne electronic attack (AEA) aircraft combines the Super Hornet's proven airframe and mission systems with a next-generation airborne electronic attack suite. By using the Super Hornet airframe, the EA-18G program and the Navy can leverage the existing capabilities and known reliability and maintainability characteristics of the F/A-18E/F to provide an advanced AEA platform at a fraction of the cost and time of a completely new aircraft. Unlike the two aircraft already in flight test, the EA-18G Growler delivered today was entirely assembled and tested on the same production line as the existing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

"We're very proud today to follow the Super Hornet tradition of delivering on our promises," said Bob Gower, Boeing vice president of F/A-18 programs. "We made a very ambitious promise to our customer in 2003 that we would deliver this aircraft, built on the same line as our Super Hornets, by the end of 2007. We've not only met those promises; our team has found a way to meet every challenge and deliver a cost-effective, incredibly capable product, ahead of schedule."

"Since the rollout in August of '06, the first flight, the software, the flight testing, it's all coming on time, which is a tremendous boon in my world," said U.S. Navy procurement chief Rear Adm. Kenneth Floyd, director, Aviation and Aircraft Carrier Plans and Requirements. "We're glad to have it, and once we get it out in the fleet, we're going to be flying this thing in ways that nobody ever thought possible. A good day for the Navy, a good day for the nation, and I think the only people that might be having a bad day are the people that end up on the business end of this thing's capacity."

The aircraft, dubbed G-1, will join the flight test program at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., before entering fleet service. The Growler is expected to complete flight testing in 2008, followed by initial operational capability in 2009.

EA-18G Capabilities
Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses: The EA-18G will counter enemy air defenses using both reactive and pre-emptive jamming techniques.
Stand-off and Escort Jamming: The EA-18G will be highly effective in the traditional stand-off jamming mission, but with the speed and agility of a Super Hornet, it will also be effective in the escort role.
Integrated Air/Ground AEA: Dramatically enhanced situational awareness and uninterrupted communications will enable the EA-18G to achieve a higher degree of integration with ground operations than has been previously achievable.
Self-protect and Time-Critical Strike Support: With its Advanced Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, digital data links and air-to-air missiles, the EA-18G will have self-protection capability and will also be effective for target identification and prosecution.
Growth: High commonality with the F/A-18E/F, nine available weapon stations and modern avionics enable cost-effective synergistic growth for both aircraft, setting the stage for continuous capability enhancement.

Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) Capabilities
Full Spectrum: The EA-18G's ALQ-218 wideband receiver combined with the ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System will be effective against any surface-to-air threat.
Precision Airborne Electronic Attack: Selective-reactive technology enables the EA-18G to rapidly sense and locate threats with a significantly higher degree of accuracy than was previously possible. This improved accuracy enables greater concentration of energy against threats.
Advanced Communication Countermeasures: Its modular Communication Countermeasure Set enables the EA-18G to counter a wide range of communication systems and is readily adaptable to an ever-changing threat spectrum.
Interference Cancellation System (INCANS): INCANS dramatically enhances aircrew situational awareness by enabling uninterrupted communications during jamming operations.

Naval Air Systems Command PMA-265 is the U.S. Navy acquisition office for the EA-18G.

Northrop P-61 Black Widow

The P-61 was the first US aircraft specifically designed as a night fighter. As large as a medium bomber, it was actually very maneuverable. The P-61 was first fielded in Europe but found greater use in the Pacific. The Black Widow replaced the interim Douglas P-70 and eventually equipped all 14 USAAF night-fighter units. The key to the P-61's success was the Western Electric SCR-720 airborne intercept radar.

The first recorded "kill" came on July 6, 1944, when 1st Lt. Francis Eaton (pilot), 2d Lt. James E. Ketchum (radar operator), and SSgt. Gary Anderson (gunner) intercepted and shot down a Japanese "Betty" bomber. P-61 crews accounted for 127 confirmed victories, including 18 V-1 "buzz bombs" in Europe. Four Black Widow crews became aces.

The last kill by a P-61 was made by Major Lee Kendall to whom "Lady in the Dark" was assigned. The nose art was commissioned by Major Kendall on Iwo Jima. Major Kendall, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, on August 15, 1945 while on CAP caused a Tojo aircraft to crash - the Japanese fighter crashed into the Pacific without a shot being fired. At that time Kendall was known as Captain Solie Solomon (look at document).

In 1946, 36 aircraft of a slightly modified design were built as the F-15 Reporter photoreconnaissance aircraft. P-61s were also used for ejection-seat tests and for a research program that studied the effects of thunderstorms on aircraft structures after the war. In 1946, a dozen P-61Cs were transferred to the Marines as trainers and were designated F2Ts. The P-61 was phased out of USAF service in 1952, and the last F-15 was retired in 1955

Only four P-61s are thought to exist today.
The first one, a C-model that never saw combat, is on display at the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson, in Dayton, Ohio.
The second is on display at the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington DC.
The third is on display at, of all places, a park in China.
The fourth is currently (and slowly) being restored at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum at the Reading, PA, airport. It was discovered on a mountainside in New Guinea. Check out the museum's website for some great info this particular P61 and the ongoing restoration.

Douglas B-18 Bolo

The Douglas Aircraft Co. developed the B-18 to replace the Martin B-10 as the Army Air Corps' standard bomber. The Bolo's design was based on the Douglas DC-2 commercial transport. During Air Corps bomber trials at Wright Field in 1935, the B-18 prototype competed with the Martin 146 (an improved B-10) and the four engine Boeing 299, forerunner of the B-17. Although many Air Corps officers believed the Boeing design was superior, only 13 YB-17s were initially ordered. Instead, the Army General Staff selected the less costly Bolo and, in January 1936, ordered 133 as B-18s. Later, 217 more were built as B-18As with a "shark" nose in which the bombardier's position was extended forward over the nose gunner's station.
By 1939, underpowered and with inadequate defensive armament, the Bolo was the Air Corps' primary bomber. Some B-18s were destroyed by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. By early 1942, improved aircraft replaced the Bolo as a first-line bombardment aircraft. Many B-18's were then used as transports, or modified as B-18Bs for anti-submarine duty in the Carribean, with MAD detectors.

Lockheed Martin KC-130J

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has carried out the first flight of a KC-130J being built for the United States Marine Corps. This version of the C-130J Hercules will be used for air-to-air refuelling, rapid ground refuelling and airlift roles.

The USMC has eight of these aircraft on order, with three more currently in the 2001 Defence Budget. At least 51 tankers will be needed to replace the Marine Corps' current fleet of ageing KC-130F/Rs. The first of these new aircraft is scheduled for delivery later this year.

KC-130J on first flight, without wing mounted refuelling pods

The KC-130J has a 57,500 pound (8,455 US gallons) fuel offload capacity using wing fuel and external tanks. The aircraft also has the capability to carry an additional 24,392 pounds (3,600 US gallons) of fuel in a specially configured internal fuselage tank. The tanker's standard probe-and-drogue configuration is suited for refuelling helicopters and jet aircraft. Internal provisions for its own refuelling probe provide even greater flexibility if required in the future.

The nucleus of the new KC-130J is the Flight Refuelling Ltd. (FRL) Mark32B- 901E aerial refuelling system. It features microprocessor-controlled, electrically driven hose reel units ensuring improved reliability, fuel flow and receiver compatibility over previous KC-130 systems. The FRL system allows fuel delivery pressure and flow rates to be adjusted at the hose end to better suit various receivers, while ram air turbine-driven fuel boost pumps in each pod improve fuel off-load performance.

Skupina ukazuje profesionální kvality amerického vojenského letectva, kterých je dosahováno jeho piloty a letadly.

Cíle skupiny jsou:

Podpora náborových programů USAF.
Posílení důvěry veřejnosti vůči USAF a ukázka profesionálních schopností příslušníků USAF.
Posílení morálky a ducha vzájemnosti u jednotlivých příslušníků a složek USAF.
Podpora mezilidských vztahů uvnitř USAF.

Skupina

Thunderbirds je jednotka ACC (Air Combat Command), která se skládá z osmi pilotů (včetně šesti vystupujících), čtyř styčných důstojníků, tří civilních zaměstnanců a více než 130členného personálu z 25 odborností.

Letecké představení Thunderbirds je směsí skupinového létání a sólových letů. Formace čtyř letounů “diamant” ukazuje trénovanost a preciznost pilotů USAF, zatímco lety jednotlivců zdůrazňují maximální schopnosti letounů F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Piloti Thunderbirds předvádějí během vystoupení přibližně 30 různých manévrů. Celá show – jak pozemní, tak letecká – trvá okolo 75 minut. Doba mezi jednotlivými přehlídkami v období březen až listopad a zimní měsíce jsou věnovány tréninku a výcviku nových členů skupiny.

Přidělení důstojníci slouží u skupiny dva roky, personál tři až čtyři. Nově příchozí musí být cvičeni každého půl roku.

Thunderbirds předvádějí ročně maximálně 88 svých vystoupení – nikdy nedošlo ke zrušení vystoupení z důvodu špatné údržby strojů. Více než 3400 vystoupení těchto červeno-bílo-modrých tryskáčů vidělo přes 280 miliónů diváků ve všech padesáti amerických státech a v 55 jiných zemích celého světa.

K odpovědnému úkolu skupiny jako oficiálního reprezentanta USAF, jsou Thunderbirds navíc součástí bojových sil. Pokud je potřeba, členové týmu, personál i letadla mohou být rychle přičleněni ke stíhací jednotce na Nellis AFB, Nevada. Vzhledem k tomu, že letouny Thunderbirds jsou jen lehce modifikovány, jejich příprava do bojové pohotovosti netrvá déle než 72 hodin.

Lockheed Martin (dříve General Dynamic) F-16 Fighting Falcon představuje plný rozsah schopností, které mají taktické stíhače USAF. Vícefunkční stíhač s velkou obratností prokazuje, že je jedním z nejlepších taktických bombardérů a bojových letadel na světě. Jedinou modifikací běžného stroje pro potřeby skupiny je instalace vyvíječe kouře do prostoru, v němž je normálně umístěn 20mm kanón, a nátěr letounu v barvách Thunderbirds.

Historie

Skupina Thunderbirds byla oficiálně ustanovena 1. června 1953 jako “3600. Letecký předváděcí tým” na Luke AFB, Arizona. Jejím prvním letounem byl F-84G Thunderjet, bojový stíhací bombardér s přímými křídly, jenž se účastnil akcí v Koreji. Začátkem roku 1955 přešla skupina na letouny se šípovitým křídlem F-84F Thunderstreak.

V červnu 1956 se tým přesunul na svou současnou základnu Nellis AFB. V tu samou dobu vyměnili Thunderbirds veterána F-84 za první supersonický letoun světa F-100 Super Sabre, který měl sloužit skupině následujících 13 let. S tímto letadlem předvedl tým více než 1000 vystoupení po celém světě. Později byl F-100 vyměněn za Republic F-105 Thunderchief, ale už po šesti show se v roce 1964 kvůli rozsáhlým úpravám, které vyžadovaly všechny Thunderchiefy, vrátila skupina k F-100 Super Sabre.

V létech 1969-73 létali Thunderbirds s frontovým stíhačem F-4E Phantom. V roce 1974 přešli na první supersonický cvičný letoun na světě T-38 Talon. T-38 byl mnohem hospodárnější ve spotřebě paliva a také jeho údržba byla méně finančně náročná než údržba velkého F-4.

Začátkem roku 1983 Thunderbirds obnovili svou tradiční roli demonstrátora schopností frontových letounů USAF. Přechodem k F-16A tak bylo divákům opět umožněno vidět ukázky lidského potenciálu ve spojení s nejmodernější leteckou technologií.

Do Evropy se Thunderbirds vrátili po 13 létech roku 1984, kdy jejich představení shlédlo přes 3,2 miliónu diváků v 11 zemích.

Nejvíce návštěvníků bylo v roce 1987 na Coney Islandu, N.Y. – představení vidělo 2,25 miliónu lidí! Turné po Dálném Východě bylo významné jejich debutem v Pekingu – bylo to první americké vojenské vystoupení v komunistické zemi.

Evropské turné v roce 1991 bylo zrušeno díky operaci Desert Storm a celá sezóna byla zkrácena. V roce 1992 přešli Thunderbirds na modernější stroje F-16C. Éra F-16A skončila.

Roku 1996 cestovala skupina opět po Evropě, kde se předvedla i davům diváků v zemích bývalého Varšavského paktu jako “Velvyslanci v modrém” (Ambassadors in Blue). V červenci téhož roku se zúčastnila i zahájení Olympijských her v Atlantě – její vystoupení shlédly asi 3,5 miliardy diváků na celém světě.

22. května 1999 měla skupina Thunderbirds poprvé vystoupit v jediné nově přijaté zemi NATO - v České republice, v Hradci Králové. Bohužel díky probíhajícímu konfliktu v Jugoslávii bylo celé její evropské turné zrušeno.

Mil Mi-28A/N Havoc

Mil Mi-28 Havoc is a modern combat helicopter able to destroy armoured and unarmoured combat material, low and slow flying airborne vehicles and other battlefield targets. The helicopter design is based on the conventional pod and boom configuration with a tail rotor. The design of this helicopter is similar to well-known older battle helicopter Mi-24 Hind, which is used in many countries of East Europe incl. Czech Republic. The pilot and the navigator/systems officer are accommodated in two separate cockpits in tandem configuration under individual canopies. The fuselage of the Mi-28 has a bay fitted with a hatch door. The bay can accommodate three people for the rescue of downed friendly air crew. The helicopter has non-retractable tricycle tailwheel type landing gear. The energy absorbing landing gear and energy absorbing seats protect the crew in a crash landing or in a low-altitude vertical fall. The crew are able to survive a vertical fall up to 12 metres per second. When the helicopters altitude allows parachute operation, the crew can bail out in an emergency. If the choice is made to bail out then it is possible to jettison the wings and cabin doors in order to remove any obstruction which could otherwise be caused by the protruding parts of the helicopter.

The helicopter can be operated autonomously for long periods from poorly prepared pads in the forward area of operations.The helicopter's construction makes it suitable for transportation by aircraft to the theatre of operations with minimum stripping and rapid reassembly.

The helicopter can fly at a maximum speed of 300 km/hour, can fly rearwards and sideways at speeds up to 100 km/hour and is able to hover turn at 45 degrees per second. This highly manoeuvrable helicopter is able to demonstrate aerial stunts such as loops and snap-rolls.

Mi-28N Night Havoc

In August 1996 the Moscow Helicopter Plant rolled out a first prototype of the day and night capable version of the helicopter, the Mi-28N Night Havoc. The Night Havoc helicopter first flew in November 1996 and the test procedures are scheduled for completion during 1999.

The surveillance and fire control system developed for the Mi-28N has the wide and narrow field optical channels together with an optical television and night vision infrared channel.

The Night Havoc helicopter retains most of the structural design of the Mi-28. The main difference is the installation of an integrated electronic combat system. Other modifications include the main gearbox for transmitting higher power to the rotor; new design of high efficiency blades with swept- shaped tips; an engine fuel injection control system for high power operating modes.

The main sensors of the integrated electronic combat system are the microwave radar antenna mounted above the rotor head and a FLIR (forward looking infrared) system.. The helicopter is able to hover under cover with just the radar head looking over trees, buildings or high ground. The integrated combat system uses onboard processing to display the helicopter location on a moving map indicator, and to show the flight, systems and target information on the cockpit liquid crystal displays. The crew are equipped with night vision goggles. The pilots are able to perform nap of the earth flight missions in day or night conditions and in adverse weather.

The g-loading of the Mi-28N exceeds 3g and a range of acrobatic manoeuvres including a vertical loop have been demonstrated in public.

Development

The development of this helicopter had started in the end of 70's according to specifications annonced by Soviet Ministry of Defense like the best competitor had started development of Ka-50.

Avionics

Cockpit

The crew have two compartments separated with armoured partitioning, the pilot seated in the higher rear compartment and the navigator/systems officer in the front compartment. The Mi-28 has a fully armoured cabin including the windshield which withstands impact by 7.62 and 12.7 mm bullets and 20 mm shell fragments. It is equipped with state of the art sighting and observation, pilot, navigation and communications systems.

The cockpit is designed specifically to minimise the workload on the pilot particularly during low altitude flight and combat missions:

only the information relating to the completion of the combat mission is presented to the pilot and non vital quantitative data is excluded.
the control systems are grouped so the controls used in flight are arranged on the left panel, the pitch-throttle lever and the control stick, and the controls used for flight preparation are mounted on the right hand side panels.
the helicopter systems automatically carry out the data processing and system control functions.
the systems assign priorities in the deployment of weapons.

Engines

The Mi-28A helicopter is powered by two TV3-117VMA turboshaft engines. The power plant is fitted with deflectors and separators to prevent dust ingestion in air intakes to protect the engines from wear when taking off from unprepared pads. The engines are fitted on either side of the fuselage to enhance the combat survivability.The helicopter is equipped with an auxiliary power unit (APU) for self- contained operation.

The fuel tanks are filled with polyurethane foam in order to reduce the risk of explosion. In the event that the fuel tanks sustain damage, any rupture holes in the tanks are healed by latex in the self- healing covers. The fuel feed system in the helicopter's powerplant operates under vacuum, which prevents the helicopter being flooded with fuel and being vulnerable to fire if the pipelines are damaged in combat.

The thermal signature of the helicopter has been reduced by a factor of 2.5x compared to its predecessor, the Mi-24 helicopter. The engine has exhaust mixer boxes over the exhaust ducts and thermal screening to provide protection against heat seeking missiles.

If the helicopter transmission gearboxes sustain damage for example by a missile fragment penetrating the gearbox casing, the gearbox will operate for 30 minutes without oil.

Rotor blades

The main rotor head of the Mi-28 has elastomeric bearings and the main rotor blades are made from composite materials. The tail rotor is designed on a biplane configuration with independently controlled X-shaped blades. The turnable stabilizer is fitted asymmetrically on the end of a tailboom. In real combat missions the single rotor design allows the helicopter to continue flight and land with damaged main rotor blades or damaged anti-torque blades in the majority of cases.

A new design of rotor blade, all plastic with swept shaped tips has been installed on the Night Havoc Mi-28N helicopter. The new all plastic blades can sustain hits from 30 mm shells.

Weapon systems

The crew has two members. The pilot in the second of the tandem cabins flies the helicopter and uses the unguided weapons. When a high priority target is detected, the pilot uses a helmet mounted target designator which allocates the target to the navigator's surveillance and fire control system. The navigator/weapons officer in the forward cockpit is then able to deploy guided weapons or a movable gun against the target. The targeting system follows the direction of the pilot's eyes. The navigator can seek out and identify targets using the movable surveillance and fire control unit mounted on a gyrostabilised platform. The navigator can then deploy guided missiles and the helicopters fast moving gun against the targets.

The Mi-28A has small sweptback mid-mounted stubwings with four suspension units. Countermeasures pods are mounted on the wingtips. The helicopter's weapons systems are selected according to the requirements of the combat mission. The helicopter can be armed with a mixture of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, unguided rockets and podded guns. The shells used for the gun and the antitank guided missiles carried on the helicopter are standard ordnance used by land forces and therefore the logistics of rearming quickly in forward bases is simplified.

Integrated surveillance and fire control system

The integrated surveillance and fire control system has two optical channels providing wide and narrow fields of view and a narrow field of view optical television channel. The system can move within 110 degrees in azimuth and from +13 to -40 degrees in elevation. The gun moves in the same range and in synchronisation with the fire control system. The surveillance and fire control system incorporates a built in laser range finder which provides the target range data to the airborne digital computer for computation of the firing parameters for the gun and for the launch of the unguided rockets. The data is also downloaded from the laser range finder for the launch of the guided missiles and the selection of the optimum launch trajectory.

Anti-tank missile

The Mi-28N Night Havoc helicopter is armed with Shturm and Ataka anti-tank missiles both supplied by the Machinery Design Bureau based in the Moscow Region of Russia. Up to 16 anti-tank missiles can be mounted on the helicopter. Shturm is a short-range radio command-guided missile. The Ataka missile's guidance is by narrow radar beam which has proven robustness against hostile jamming and countermeasures. The maximum range of the missile is 8 kilometres. In real combat situations over broken terrain the average target range is between 3 and 6 kilometres. The target hit probability of the Ataka missile is higher than 0.96 at ranges 3 to 6 kilometres. The kill probability against heavily armoured targets is also close to unity. The missile has a shaped charge warhead with a tandem charge for penetration of 950 to 1000 mm thick homogeneous armour and also multilayer and explosive armour.

Air to air missiles

The helicopter can launch fire-and-forget air to air missiles with independent self homing systems.

Unguided weapons

The helicopter can also carry four containers each with twenty 80 mm unguided rockets (total eighty 80 mm rockets) or with five 122 mm rockets (total twenty 122 mm rockets). The helicopter can alternatively carry containers with grenade launchers, 23 mm guns, 12.7 and 7.62 machine guns, aerial bombs and incendiary tanks.

Cannon

The helicopter is equipped with a turreted 30 mm cannon, the 2A42. The gun mount is stabilised in two planes. A firing unit is installed between two faired cartridge housings mounted directly on the gun carriage. The gun is fed selectively from the cartridge housings. The firing calculator device provides high firing precision at all angles of rotation of the gun. The weight of one round of ammunition is 1,000 grams. The cannon provides a muzzle velocity of 1,000 metres per second.

První zdokonalený letoun A-10 pro USAFE

Firma Lockheed Martin Federal Systems vyrobila a dodala Americkým vzdušným silám v Evropě (USAFE - United States Air Forces Europe) první z 21 plánovaných upravených letounů A/OA-10, který je vybaven kombinovaným inerciálním navigačním zařízením EGI (Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System) s vestavěným terminálem družicového navigačního systému GPS. Zařízení EGI je samostatná jednotka, která je schopná zpracovávat data přijímaná z družicového navigačního systému GPS, slučovat je s údaji inerciálního navigačního zařízení a využívat je pro přesné určování polohy letounu A/OA-10 při přímé podpoře pozemních vojsk.

Tato speciální úprava, která je realizována na základě zkušeností z posledních ozbrojených konfliktů, má podstatně zvýšit nejen navigační schopnosti letounu, ale i ulehčit pilotům vyhledávání a ničení pozemních cílů ve složité situaci na moderním bojišti. Jedním z dalších podstatných zdokonalení je instalace nové řídicí a zobrazovací jednotky CDU (Control Display Unit). Prvotní náklady na realizaci zdokonalovacího projektu dosahují výše 3,8 mil. USD. Hlavní kontrakt, který byl s firmou Lockheed Martin uzavřen v prosinci roku 1997 by mohl v příštích 9 letech dosáhnout hodnoty 488 mil. USD.

Belgické firmy Societe Anonyne Belge de Constructions Aeronautiques a SABCA, které jsou subdodavateli firmy Lockheed Martin, převádějí výrobu do jejich výrobních závodů v Charleroi (Belgie). Plánovaných 20 letounů má být přestaveno během následujících tří let, přičemž druhý letoun byl předán firmě SABCA v polovině dubna. Zdokonalené letouny A/OA-10 s moderním elektronickým vybavením budou dislokovány na letecké základně ve Spangdahlem (SRN).

A-10 a OA-10 Thunderbolt II byly prvními letadly amerických leteckých sil speciálně vytvořenými pro bitevní akce proti pozemním cílům a přímou podporu pozemních jednotek. Jsou to jednoduché, efektivní a odolné dvoumotorové proudové letouny, které mohou být použity proti všem pozemním cílům včetně tanků a jiných obrněných vozidel. Jejich základ tvoří obávaný 30mm rotační kanón GAU-8/A typu Avenger Gatling.

A-10/OA-10, zvané též zvané též Warthog, Tankbuster nebo Tankkiller vynikají svou obratností zejména při nízkých rychlostech a malých výškách a jsou při použití svých palubních zbraní vysoce přesné. Jsou schopny létat nízkou rychlostí poblíž bojové zóny a operovat ve výškách pod 300 m při viditelnosti 2,4 km. Jejich rozsáhlý bitevní potenciál a schopnost krátkého vzletu a přistání (STOL, Short Take-Off and Landing) jim umožňuje používat letiště nedaleko frontových linií. Piloti těchto letadel mohou nyní díky přístrojovému vybavení provádět své mise i během noci. K pozdějšímu vylepšením patřila instalace širokoúhlého systému HUD (Head-Up Display) a nočního navigačního a útočného systému LANTIRN (Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night), který obsahuje zařízení FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer) a laserové snímače, jakož i radar sledující terén. Tento inovační program však nebyl zahájen a jediným se stal podvěs pro laserové navádění, zvaný "Pave Penny".. Prototyp vzlétl 15.2.1975, sériová výroba byla zahájena roku 1977 a skončila v únoru 1984 předáním 713. stroje.

První stroje A-10A směřovaly v říjnu 1975 na Davis-Monthan AFB (Air Force Base) v Arizoně. Jejich výše uvedené přednosti se ukázaly být později životně důležité pro americká a spojenecká vojska během Operace Pouštní bouře (Desert Storm, válka v Perském zálivu). Během této války letadla A-10 kupříkladu vykonala 8100 bojových vzletů a vypustila na 90 procent všech použitých raket AGM-65 Maverick. I přes adaptaci na verzi OA-10A (od 80. let) pro letecké předsunuté operace a přes vynikající výsledky ve válce v Perském zálivu je nyní v činnosti pouze 125 těchto strojů. Další letouny byly uvolněny na vývoz do spřátelených zemí.

A-6, postavený koncem 50. let, je dvoumístný námořní a pozemní střední přepadový a útočný letoun použitelný za jakéhokoliv počasí a bez ohledu na povětrnostní podmínky.

První z šesti prototypů YA-2F1 vzlétl v dubnu 1960 a začátkem roku 1963 byly zařazeny do služby u US Navy první A-6 z plánované dodávky 482 strojů. Intrudery sehrály velkou roli ve válce ve Vietnamu, když absolvovaly přes 35 tisíc bojových letů. Přes počáteční potíže s avionikou dosáhl A-6A pozoruhodných úspěchů, když byl na vietnamském bojišti často jediným letadlem schopným létat a účinně bojovat.

Výroba typu A-6A byla zastavena roku 1969 po pětistém vyprodukovaném kusu, ale téměř ihned následovala verze A-6E, která plně využila pokroku dosaženého mezitím v avionice. Definitivní verze A-6E je již vybavena mnoharežimovým navigačním a útočným radarem Norden APQ-148 s mapou terénu a mnoha dalšími prvky. Pod čelním radomem je umístěna posuvná věžička TRAM (útočný systém rozpoznávání cílů s mnoha senzory). TRAM se skládá z infračerveného přístroje pro noční vidění FLIR a laserového detekčního a značkovacího zařízení, což umožňuje vysokou přesnost zachycování cílů a používání zbraní za každého počasí. Z dalších, odvozených modelů se v plné schopnosti operačního nasazení udržuje pouze tankovací KA-6D, což je létající cisterna pro tankování paliva za letu používaná US Navy.

Poslední plánovaná verze třetí generace Intruderů , A-6F, byla zrušena a vyřazení všech zbývajících strojů bylo plánováno na rok 1997. Termín se však prodloužil do r. 2000. Z Intruderu byl vyvinut EA-6B Prowler, letoun pro elektronický boj.
